NORTON SHORES, MI -- Paddling, music, laughter and lots of pink took over part of the Ross Park beach and Mona Lake on Saturday.
Community members were once again back with their paddles in Muskegon County for the annual Standup for the Cure event, which was held online only in 2020. Standup for the Cure is designed to raise awareness and money for those battling breast cancer.
The event featured yoga, a blessing, a silent auction and standup paddle boarding. The fundraiser was scaled back from previous years from about 600 participants to 200 due to COVID-19 concerns.
This year’s fundraising total has not been released yet, but the event raised over $100,000 in 2018 and $89,000 in 2017. Hackley Community Care receives 75% of funds for screenings to those in need and Van Andel Institute receives the remaining 25%.
Vice President of Standup for the Cure and cancer survivor Shawn Norden was happy to be back in person, although at a reduced capacity.
“It’s a day of celebration,” Norden said.
According to the organization website, “Standup for the Cure’s mission is to build a compassionate community engaged in raising funds and awareness to fight breast cancer through events and programs that celebrate a healthy lifestyle.”
Regular and new attendees were happy with the event.
“This is an awesome event,” Mari Rice said. “I am a survivor of five years and it’s great to participate for the first time ever.”
