MEDINA, Ohio -- The Farmers Exchange has received the Best Commercial Building Rehabilitation Award from Heritage Ohio.

The Farmers Exchange building, long a dubious icon just south of the Medina square, was damaged by two fires -- in 1915 and 1935 -- then was condemned in 2016.

Developer Beacon Marshall Companies took on the massive renovation project. The revitalized Farmers Exchange is now home to 16 apartments, a brewery, a butcher shop, a coffee shop, a restaurant and an open floor plan retail space.

It has become a popular addition to Medina’s already thriving historical district.

“Each year, Heritage Ohio calls for nominations for awards from throughout the state,” said Joyce Barrett, Heritage Ohio executive director. “I will say the Best Commercial Building Rehabilitation award is probably the most competitive category, because Ohio has really fabulous historic preservation work going on throughout the state.

“I think (the Farmers Exchange) was chosen by the jury because it is an agricultural building, which is challenging and difficult to rehabilitate,” said Barrett. “That conversion is challenging.”

She explained that there is some prestige that comes along with getting this award, but it’s mostly a form of recognition for all of the hard work that was put into the project.

“I hope that it really spurs other investments in the community as people recognize that Medina’s got a lot going on,” said Barrett.
