- The Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA) has launched its statewide health information exchange, The Mississippi Health Access Exchange (MHAX) and has joined the KONZA Nationwide Network, a national HIE.

“MSMA is excited to facilitate this physician-led effort with an HIE advisory council comprised of physician leaders,” Claude Brunson, MD, MSMA executive director, said in a statement.

“This physician-led approach will aid in alleviating unnecessary burdens on both physicians and patients, through the sharing of clinical information at the point-of-care. We are confident that MHAX will drastically improve the sharing of clinical data and drive improvements in patient care, while supporting the independence of our member physicians in the newly emerging health care environment.”

MHAX features data about inpatient admissions, emergency department visits, and post-acute care transition notifications for providers.

The statewide exchange aims to reduce costs and improve patient care by lowering the chances of duplicative testing and linking providers throughout the state. It also meets the recent standards put forward by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS), which awards health systems that can show they are reducing hospital re-admissions and improving care quality.

Currently, the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Singing River Health System, and Baptist Memorial Health Care are the HIE’s major participants.

All patients have free access to their respective medical records.

Using the KONZA connection, MHAX participants can connect to hospitals, physician practices, and healthcare providers across the country, along with other participating Mississippi providers. MSMA participants can also access KONZA’s analytic tools and solutions to streamline patient data on its patients. Participants will also be able to categorize high-risk patients, observe 30-day readmission patterns, exchange alerts, access opioid initiatives, and track performance, said the HIE.

“As one of the largest medical record exchange networks in the nation, KONZA is pleased to welcome the Mississippi Health Access eXchange (MHAX) to the KONZA Network,” Laura McCrary, president and CEO of KONZA, said in a statement.

“It is an honor to partner with Mississippi health care providers and the Mississippi State Medical Association. We look forward to supporting their mission of maintaining quality patient care in Mississippi.”

In June, the Mississippi Hospital Association (MHA) established the state-wide HIE in an effort to boost interoperability between Mississippi hospitals and physicians as they transition toward value-based care.

Initially, the HIE got three regional hospitals and two of the state’s largest health systems to sign on.

To get the exchange going, MHA partnered with Care Continuity to use its navigation technology and patient advocacy technology.

In early October, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced funding for five HIEs, including KONZA, to enhance their public health emergency response efforts and coordination with state and local public health agencies.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) awarded two-year cooperative agreements, totaling $2.5 million, from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Acts (CARES Act), signed by President Trump in late March.

Under the Strengthening the Technical Advancement and Readiness of Public Health Agencies via Health Information Exchange (STAR HIE) Program, each of the five recipients aim to boost HIE services so their connected public health agencies can exchange, access, and utilize crucial patient data during public health emergencies. ONC plans to award these five recipients up to $500,000 each.

KONZA said it will use this funding and increased HIE data to develop COVID-19 registries for public health agencies, boost HIE participation for highly impacted COVID-19 areas, and improve traditional lab messages with the newfound data to support COVID-19 lab reporting.
