Meg St-Esprit, a Pittsburgh-based journalist and mom of four kids, says that working while homeschooling in 2020 “has been pretty much the hellscape you would expect.” Posing for a traditional holiday card just didn’t seem like the right way to reflect their year.
“You should see my toddler's Dorothy Hamill right now,” St-Esprit says of her child’s at-home pandemic bowl cut. St-Esprit sees her humorous card as a sort of 2020 time capsule, something that’s “interesting to save and show the grandkids one day.”
Julie Foster, an attorney in Austin, says she started making humorous holiday cards years ago, when her family was posing in a park wearing all white and attempting to appear elegant and serene. Instead, they ended up being chased by geese. The actual goose chase became that year’s holiday card photo, and they never looked back. “I think with the political divisiveness in our country, cultural shifts, and the pandemic, people crave some levity,” Foster says.
“I love a funny card because they surprise me,” Foster says. “Any surprise that doesn’t have to do with a virulent disease or pending civil conflict is a joy in 2020.”
In that sense, sending a photo of my son face down in the dirt feels pretty festive.
