Red Sox to bring back manager Alex Cora, reports say - Houston Chronicle

According to multiple reports, the Boston Red Sox will rehire manager Alex Cora, whom Major League Baseball cast as a central figure in the Astros’ sign-stealing scheme during the 2017 season.

Following its investigation into the Astros’ actions, the league suspended Cora, former Astros manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow for one year. Cora and the Red Sox “mutually agreed to part ways” a few days later.

In its 13-page findings about the Astros’ system, Major League Baseball determined the Astros’ trashcan banging scheme was “ with the exception of Cora, player-driven and player-executed.” Cora served as the team’s bench coach.

The league found that Cora ”was involved in developing both the banging scheme and utilizing the replay review room to decode and transmit signs,” but withheld punishment until it finished an investigation into the 2018 Boston Red Sox.

That team, managed by Cora, was also found to have electronically stolen signs, but at a far less egregious level than the Astros. Cora was also cleared of any wrongdoing, paving an easier path for his return. MLB suspended him solely for his role in the Astros’ scandal.

Luhnow, Hinch and Cora’s suspensions ended at the conclusion of the World Series. Hinch was hired as the Detroit Tigers manager within three days. Now, Cora returns.
