Shane Lemieux set to bring 'some nasty' back to Giants offensive line - New York Post

The Giants’ offensive line will get another dose of “nasty” Sunday for their NFC East battle against the Washington Football Team.

Shane Lemieux started for the first time in his career Monday night against the Buccaneers, and the rookie left guard is set to be back in the trenches as Will Hernandez continues to work back from testing positive for COVID-19.

“My adrenaline was rushing pretty good,” Lemieux said Friday. “I felt like I was prepared. I felt like I was ready to handle the task. I didn’t let the moment get too big and I just played. I think every play, even at practice we see some really good D-linemen. Nothing really shocked me. It is the NFL so every single play, the guy you are going against is really good.”

The fifth-round pick out of Oregon delivered a solid performance, playing with the kind of effort that will help keep him in a rotation at guard with Hernandez and Kevin Zeitler (as the Giants have done at tackle), even after Hernandez comes off the reserve/COVID-19 list. Hernandez is eligible to be activated Saturday, though he won’t be ready to play Sunday.

“The level of competitiveness [Lemieux] plays with, some nasty, he definitely gave us some juice in there,” coach Joe Judge said. “Look, you line up for your first snap in the NFL and you’re seeing Ndamukong Suh across from you right there, that’s a ‘Welcome to the NFL, buddy.’ But this guy didn’t blink. He didn’t shy away from anything. He really answered the bell for us.”

Lemieux just may need to work on his spike game.

Late in the second quarter against the Buccaneers, he and rookie left tackle Andrew Thomas plowed their way into the end zone with Wayne Gallman behind them for a 2-yard touchdown. Gallman handed the ball to Lemieux to perform the spike.

“Everyone is kind of giving me a little bit of hell for it because it was a bad spike,” Lemieux said. “I was just so juiced and excited to be in the moment. I just wanted to celebrate with my team, and I thought that was pretty cool.”

After squaring off against Suh and the Buccaneers, next up for Lemieux is a Washington defensive line filled with former first-round picks, such as tackles Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne — a reminder of his new life in the NFL.

“It’s not like when I was back at Oregon and we were playing Southern Utah, it’s almost like a bye week,” said Lemieux, whose Ducks beat Southern Utah 77-21 in 2017. “Every single week you have to go because there’s guys in this league on every single team that can play ball.”
