Boston Celtics to bring in Theo Pinson for training camp, could fight for two-way spot (report) - MassLive.com

Training camp is less than a week away as the Celtics continue to bring in more bodies to round out who’s competing for spots. Boston will also bring in wing Theo Pinson into the fold, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Pinson’s arrival brings Boston’s player count up to 19 players, with the maximum set at 20. The 25-year-old North Carolina product spent the past three seasons with the Knicks and Nets.

The Celtics need to cut down to 15 players on the roster ahead of the season opener against the Knicks on Oct. 20. They do have two two-way spots, with one of those already filled by Sam Hauser. Pinson can compete for that other open two-way slot along with Juwan Morgan and Luke Kornet, both of whom were also brought into camp without guaranteed deals. Jabari Parker’s also on a non-guaranteed deal and will look to stick with the team.

Boston currently has 14 guaranteed contracts on its payroll. The 15th spot is still up for grabs, along with the vacant two-way slot. That’s where Pinson could potentially make his mark as he enters his fourth year in the league.

Pinson spent his first two seasons in the league with the Nets, where he played sparingly. He signed with the Knicks last season. He holds career averages of 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game in 68 career games played.

While he’s struggled on offense, Pinson’s value lies in his defense. He’ll need to showcase more parts of his game with the Celtics as they decide on who to keep among the available options.
