HPU's Fall Family Weekend to Bring Economic Boost - High Point University

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 20, 2021 – High Point University’s Fall Family Weekend will soon bring an economic boost to the city and the Piedmont Triad on Sept. 24-26. The event gives both HPU students and their families time to experience everything the university and the city have to offer.

Local restaurants, hotels and shops experience an economic boost in business during each HPU Family Weekend. Annually, HPU welcomes more than 100,000 visitors for admissions, athletic, cultural and community events.

“Our area hospitality partners immediately benefit from more than 5,000 visitors who attend HPU’s tradition of Fall Family Weekend,” says Melody Burnett, Visit High Point president. “The overall economic impact of this weekend alone brings an estimated $1.5 million to our local economy. This is just one prime example of the many events where HPU adds tremendous value to High Point that benefits us all.”

Local businesses like Giannos restaurant look forward to HPU Family Weekends, which bring an increase in sales, an energetic atmosphere and opportunities to build relationships with HPU families.

“Our staff enjoys meeting the families of the students who have become regulars, as well as meeting new HPU family members,” says Dave Nicoletta, owner of Giannos. “During the weekend, we see an increase of 10 to 15% in sales. It really creates an atmosphere throughout the city, and it’s exciting to see everyone wearing purple.”

There are a lot of events for HPU families to look forward to during the weekend, from the 5K family fun run to the grand opening of the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center, and the adjoining Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel. There will be a special performance from the award-winning iconic pop rock band, Train, on Saturday night at the arena for HPU students and their families.

The grand opening of the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center also presents future opportunities for community events. In the future, events such as the magic of music with the Disney Symphony Pops Concert and performances from the HPU Community Orchestra will be held, in addition to men’s and women’s basketball games.

“The weekend’s festivities provide time for our students to share their experiences with their families, opportunities for parents to network with one another and to explore all the wonderful offerings in the city and greater Guilford County,” says Erica Burroughs, assistant vice president for Family Engagement and Annual Giving.
