MARSHALL - A 30-year-old Marshall man was shot Friday in an exchange of gunfire with police.
The man was taken by ambulance from a home at 731 W. Hanover St. southwest of downtown two-and-a-half hours after the shooting.
Marshall Police Chief Josh Lankerd said, "officers attempted to make contact with a subject who was having some mental health issues to serve an order."
Two Marshall officers and a deputy from the Calhoun County Sheriff Department had a court order to take the man to the hospital for mental health treatment.
Police said the man opened fire as soon as the officers went to the door.
All three officers returned fire and retreated to their patrol cars.
Officers from across the county responded after the report of shots fired at police at 10:44 a.m.
Lankerd said no officers were injured and police established a perimeter in the area of Hanover and Green streets.
Officers from Marshall, Calhoun County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police, Battle Creek Police, Emmett Township police, Tribal Police and the Department of Natural Resources all converged on Marshall.
Early reports were that the man might be at large in the neighborhood. And Lankerd said social media reports of an active shooter at a grocery store, robbery of a credit union and that an officer has been shot were all false.
At least one television station reported the incorrect information about the credit union robbery.
Police were able to talk to the man by phone before members of the Emergency Response Team from the sheriff department and Marshall police entered the home at 1:26 p.m. and found the man inside suffering from several gunshot wounds.
He was taken from the scene by Marshall Firefighters Ambulance Service to Bronson Methodist Hospital for treatment. Lankerd did not have information about the man's condition and said he was still gathering details about the incident.
No one else was injured, he said.
The investigation is being conducted by the Michigan State Police.
