Detroit Red Wings stock exchange: So no defense? - Octopus Thrower

sutitong.blogspot.com

Defense was nowhere to be found in the Detroit Red Wings losses this week. Over two games, Detroit gave up a total of 15 goals – five against the Colorado Avalanche and 10 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Let’s head to the “stock exchange” to assess Detroit’s player performances in one of the strangest weeks of the year.

Trending up

Joe Veleno

Veleno has been relatively quiet on the stat sheet this season. However, every time he’s been sent down to Grand Rapids, he’s popped off and dominated (he has six goals and four assists in just 10 appearances with the Griffins). It is becoming clear that while Veleno isn’t cancelling at the NHL level yet, he’s too good to sit in the AHL.

Veleno finally found some points against the Maple Leafs Saturday night, logging a goal and an assist. Considering the frequency of goals  during that game, the two points isn’t the most impressive thing in the world. However, it was nice to see the young forward finally earn some more points at the pro level.

Lucas Raymond

Raymond’s cold streak could finally be over. He has been playing well of late, but the points just haven’t been coming for the rookie forward. Saturday night against Toronto, Raymond finally found the back of the net. He scored two goals and tacked on an assist.

Seider seems to be the favorite for the Calder out of Detroit’s rookies – but could Raymond make a final push for rookie of the year in the coming months?

Trending Down

The defense (minus Moritz Seider)

I mean, does anything really need to be said here? The Wings gave up 15 goals in two games. Obviously the defense did not play well. Even the defenseman that collected a good chunk of points were porous on defense (namely, Filip Hronek). It’s been a trend all season, but it was disturbingly clear this week.

Goaltending

Again, what is there to say here? The Red Wings goaltenders had a terrible week. Thomas Greiss was not great in his start against Colorado and he was just as bad in his appearance against Toronto. Alex Nedeljkovic was uncharacteristically bad against the Maple Leafs, finishing the game with a .760 save percentage (he was pulled for bit in the second). Detroit’s goaltenders have put on a very weak showing of late.

Staying put

Moritz Seider

Seider should still be the Calder favorite. He collected four assists this week, two against Colorado and two against Toronto. Seider leads all rookies in assists with 34, and he’s tied for fourth in rookie scoring. The rookie defenseman is by far the team’s best defender, and he proved it again with a solid week. Even in one of the team’s worst defensive performances of the year, Seider was one of the rare bright spots on the defense. His stock is still extremely high.

Dylan Larkin

No surprise here, the captain had another strong week. While he didn’t find the back of the net, Larkin collected three assists in Detroit’s two games. Being a bit banged up didn’t seem to slow the captain much. Larkin is still the best forward on the team.
