Naples Strings performs 25th COVID concert to bring community together through music - Long Beach Press Telegram

In the era of the pandemic, the entertainment industry has had to reshape how it reaches audiences.

Naples Strings, a local trio that has been around since the 80s, found a way to bring their music to Long Beach residents with their pop-up COVID concerts.

The trio performed their 25th concert on the porch of a Lindero Avenue home overlooking the waterfront Saturday evening, Oct. 10. A crowd of about 30 people sat comfortably in lawn chairs along the sidewalk and street for over an hour-long performance that spanned across different genres and generations of music.

The idea, violinist and avid gardener Elaine Tubinis said, came from a fellow horticulturist who asked Tubinis to perform for her family in their backyard in May.

“After drudging through March and April without performing we were a little resistant to go into the unknown,” Tubinis said. “But we did it and it was great.”

Tubinis, along with cellist Alan Mautner and violinist Larry Greenfield, began making flyers to advertise their outdoor concert idea — including a long list of songs to perform that range from classical hits like Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon in D Major,” to more upbeat, rock like Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

With Halloween around the corner, the trio also played holiday hits including the theme songs from “The Addams Family,” and “The Munsters.”

The hosts of Saturday’s concert, Karen Boyd and Richard Battle, had been to two prior outdoor concerts and decided to bring the group’s talent to their neighborhood.

“It’s just fantastic,” Battle said. “It’s real border-breaker in these strange times that just helps brings the whole community together.”

While Battle and Boyd had staged a seating area for friends and family, neighbors and others in the area watched from across the street — adding to the sense of community engagement.

Tubinis hopes to plan a few holiday performances for Thanksgiving and Christmas but in the meantime is still offering their services for hire. For $300, the band will entertain neighbors for an hour and play pre-selected songs by request.

To reach the Naples Strings trio, email Elaine Tubinis at elaine@naplesstrings.com.

Organizers will receive a list of songs to choose from, including classical and popular music. An open performance space also is required (including patios, lawns and driveways).
