The Philadelphia Eagles officially re-signed Jason Croom to their practice squad on Wednesday evening. The team had an opening after losing Josh McCown to the Houston Texans.
Here’s what we wrote after the Eagles waived Croom on Tuesday:
The Eagles originally added the 26-year-old to their practice squad in late September. They elevated him for two games before fully signing him to their 53-man roster ahead of their Week 7 matchup. The Eagles needed tight end depth at the time with both Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert on injured reserve. With Goedert now back from IR, though, Croom was expendable.
Goedert and Richard Rodgers are currently the only tight ends on the roster. The team also has Caleb Wilson and Hakeem Butler on the practice squad so I would guess they’re not going to be looking to bring Croom back in that capacity.
Croom ended up playing 13 offensive snaps and 23 special teams snaps in his time with Philly. He did catch his sole target for a wide open one-yard touchdown reception, so at least we’ll always have that memory.
I thought the Eagles wouldn’t be bringing Croom back because 1) they can’t elevate him again without exposing him to waivers and 2) they probably don’t need three tight ends on the practice squad. But here we are.
Perhaps the Eagles will look to move on from Croom when Zach Ertz is eventually activated from injured reserve. Ertz isn’t eligible to return until Week 11 at the earliest and he might not be physically ready until late November/early December.
