University of Nevada, Reno President Marc Johnson said things are in the works to bring Colin Kaepernick back to campus.
Johnson said he couldn't elaborate, saying it is difficult amid COVID-19 to say when or for what could bring Kaepernick, who graduated from UNR as a star student athlete in 2011, to campus.
Kaepernick went on to the NFL after college and gained national attention when he sat during the national anthem in 2016. He was both condemned and applauded for his motives to bring awareness to the oppression of black people and people of color.
Fast forward to 2020 and Kaepernick's peaceful protest is seen in a new light by many after the death of George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis police custody after an officer pressed a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes..
UNR has been criticized for not having more images of Kaepernick around campus including in a petition started by student athletes. The petition which has more than 7,200 signatures accuses UNR of removing images of one of the most famous graduates to come out of Nevada.

In 2016 after not standing for the anthem, the Reno Tahoe International Airport removed Kaepernick memorabilia from a display case.
Johnson said the items were removed by airport officials after passengers complained but UNR quickly demanded the display case with Kaepernick be reinstalled.
But it's not enough to have a few images of Kaepernick at the airport and in athletic buildings, Johnson said.
This summer UNR is adding images and tributes to campus including in the student union and at a welcome center on campus.
The additional images of Kaepernick are things students want and something that is being fixed this summer, Johnson said.
"Our black students and our student athletes, in particular, have raised this and they would like to see more images of Kaepernick here because it is so timely with the relationship with the George Floyd killing," Johnson said.
