N.J. weather: Winter storm to bring light snow, sleet and rain, could create some icy roads - NJ.com

A winter storm that had the potential to be a sizable one for the New Jersey region is now shaping up to be a small one with just a light coating of snow and sleet in the northern half of the state late Monday through late Tuesday, forecasters said Sunday afternoon.

However, there continue to be some concerns about the potential for icy roads in parts of central and southern New Jersey. In addition, forecasters are keeping a close eye on a second storm system that could impact our region later this week.

Here’s what you need to know about the first storm system in terms of its strength, its timing, what type of precipitation it will drop from the sky, and how much to expect.

STORM STRENGTH

If you were hoping for a blockbuster snowstorm in New Jersey, you may be disappointed.

“It’s going from an organized system now (in the Midwest region of the United States) to a fairly disorganized system” by the time it reaches New Jersey, said Patrick O’Hara, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s regional forecast office in Mount Holly.

“It’s a fairly weak, fast-moving system” for the Garden State region, O’Hara added, noting there won’t be a lot of moisture available in the atmosphere to generate a lot of snow.

STORM TIMING

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say the precipitation will likely start spreading across South Jersey Monday night and push into central and northern New Jersey by midnight or early Tuesday morning.

The precipitation should be on the light side, but is expected to continue on and off Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon, perhaps into Tuesday evening.

SNOW OR RAIN?

At this time, forecasters say the type of precipitation will likely vary from region to region. The weather service is expecting mainly snow and sleet in North Jersey, primarily from the Interstate 78 corridor northward, mostly rain in far southern New Jersey, and a wintry mix (snow, sleet and perhaps some freezing rain) between those two regions.

HOW MUCH SNOW?

The maps below show the snow accumulations that are currently forecast for New Jersey, as of late Sunday afternoon. The highest accumulations are expected in northern Sussex County (2 to 3 inches) and northern Passaic County (3 to 4 inches), with most of northern New Jersey forecast to get only 1 or 2 inches of snow and sleet.

Less than 1 inch of snow is forecast for Mercer and Monmouth counties, and points south.

BIGGER STORM LATER THIS WEEK?

Forecasters say there’s a potential for a bigger, stronger storm system to develop in the eastern United States late Wednesday into early Thursday, but its impact on New Jersey is not yet clear.

“There are still a lot of questions about this one,” O’Hara said Sunday afternoon.

That storm is forecast to develop across the lower Mississippi Valley on Wednesday, move across North Carolina and Virginia, then push offshore on Thursday.

“We think this storm won’t be strengthening until it moves offshore,” O’Hara said. If that projection holds up, the heaviest snow and strongest winds would remain out over the ocean.

But the storm needs to be closely monitored, O’Hara said, because a shift in the track could result in a few inches of snow and gusty winds for the New Jersey region.
