A US Army soldier based overseas is desperate to bring her rescue pup home to the US — but can’t scrape together the cash necessary for the trip, the nonprofit Paws of War announced.
The soldier, who is stationed in Eastern Europe and only identified herself as Sgt. Char, is scheduled to return back to the US soon and doesn’t want to leave behind her beloved PupPup in the harsh environment, she said in a statement released by the group.
“I’m desperately asking Paws of War to help me bring my beautiful helpless PupPup back to America with me because I can’t stand the thought of leaving her behind,” Char said.
“This spot can be very harsh to dogs and I fear she will die if she is left behind. Plus, we have formed such a strong bond that means everything to me. I can’t turn my back on her and would be forever grateful for the help to get her home.”
PupPup’s mom is a stray who liked to hang around at the base and ended up giving birth to a litter of puppies there so she could hide them from danger, Paws of War said.
On several occasions, Char and her fellow soldiers had to protect the dogs from “many potential deadly threats,” even after moving them to a safer location, the group said.
While the other puppies were quick to warm up to the soldiers, PupPup was shy and stayed hidden so Char worked to give her extra love and attention to get her comfortable and make sure she was fed.
Soon, the pair formed a strong, loving bond but as Char prepares to head back to the states, she can’t bear the thought of leaving her behind knowing she won’t survive without her.
Char is the only human PupPup will go to but the soldier needs help raising the money necessary to bring her home.
“We absolutely want to help bring PupPup back to America. These overseas rescues are extremely challenging and have a high cost,” Robert Misseri, the co-founder of Paws of War, said in a news release.
“If we don’t step in to save these dogs and cats, the soldier is forced to leave behind an animal they rescued from a bad situation. An animal they deeply love left behind can become subject to abuse, neglect and unfortunately death. It sounds harsh but that is the truth on the ground for our hero soldiers.”
Paws of War regularly helps soldiers bring their rescued animals back to the US but amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more challenging and they need more donations, the group said.
“The pandemic has added additional quarantines, medical treatments and challenges transporting animals from remote locations,” the group wrote in a release.
“There are a severely limited number of flights coming into the U.S., especially those allowing dogs, Plus, flights from overseas are costly, and there is a lot of red tape that needs to be addressed and logistics to overcome.”
