Words of wisdom bring healing - Seymour Tribune

By Pastor Steve Greene

Last time, our focus was on the harsh and critical words we so often speak.

Proverbs 12:18 shows us the stark contrast in what can happen with our words: “Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.”

We all know people cut, hurt and criticize with their words., but others speak words of wisdom that bring healing. We all need to be reminded our words are powerful.

Words can bring life, and they can bring death. Our words can build up, and our words can tear down. Words can hurt, and words can bring healing.

Here is what Paul said in Ephesians 4:29: “Let everything you say be good and helpful so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”

He is saying don’t let hurtful, unwholesome, impure words come out of your mouth.

Don’t give in to the temptation to tear other people down with your words. Let the words you speak be words that are helpful for building others up. Look for ways to encourage others.

Do you realize a single word of criticism can pierce someone’s soul and that word can stick with them for the rest of their lives? It’s true.

And on the other side of the equation, God can use a single word of encouragement to build someone up, to give them the faith, the hope and the encouragement they need to go on. There is no doubt about it, our words have incredible power.

Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Just one word of criticism can take somebody down. In the same way, one word of encouragement can build them up.

One person is a life taker simply by the words they speak. Another can be a life giver again simply by the words they speak. Do you want to be a life giver or a life taker?

Our words have the power of life, and they have the power of death. Even though we may have a disposition that leads us in one direction or another, the truth is we still get to choose. We can choose to be an encourager or we can choose to be a faultfinder.

Because of our sin nature, we tend to look to find what’s wrong before we see what’s right. A critical spirit is cancer to any relationship. Nobody wants to be constantly criticized for everything they say and do. Let’s look for ways to lift people up.
