For just a moment, the Jets diverted all the buzz over their current state and future possibilities by creating excitement around the past.
The Jets unveiled Monday a modernized version of arguably the franchise’s most popular uniform and announced plans to wear the look in two prime-time home games this season: Sept. 11 against the Bills (Week 1) and Oct. 1 against the Chiefs (Week 4).
Coaches and staff will wear throwback gear on the sideline those days, too.
The new “Legacy White” throwbacks are reminiscent of the uniforms worn from 1979-89 — an era best known for the “Sack Exchange” defense.
The Jets will wear their “Stealth Black” uniform at home against the Dolphins on Nov. 23 (Week 12) to round out the three times per season that a team can wear an alternate or throwback uniform under NFL policy.
In addition to two green stripes on the shoulders and one green stripe down the pants, the “Legacy White” uniform will include a “Sack Exchange” logo decal affixed to the helmet.
The same logo will be painted on the 50-yard line at MetLife Stadium to go with legacy-themed end zones and wall wrap.
Jets owner Woody Johnson teased the announcement Sunday when he changed his Twitter profile photo to include a hat with the throwback “Jets,” featuring an outstretched ‘J’ symbolizing an aircraft.
It’s an appropriate time to honor the “Sack Exchange” Era because defensive centerpiece Joe Klecko is about to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 5.
The Jets made the playoffs four times between 1981 and 1986, and qualifying for the postseason is the bare-minimum expectation for this upcoming first season of the Aaron Rodgers Era.
