Chiefs News: Patrick Mahomes regrets post-game exchange with Josh Allen - Arrowhead Pride

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes wasn’t happy with the officials’ call for offensive offsides that erased a go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes of their 20-17 Week 14 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

That point was evident on the broadcast — as the quarterback had to be held back from approaching officials — and later, when sound of Mahomes complaining to Bills quarterback Josh Allen was posted to X.

After sleeping on it for a few days, Mahomes joined the media for his weekly appearance on Wednesday, expressing some regret in how it all played out.

“Definitely emotion talking when I was talking to Josh at midfield,” said Mahomes. “Just [to] lose the football game, a tough football game in a tough way. I let it go on too long, because like I said, [Allen] had nothing to do with it. Just show better sportsmanship, and tell him, ‘Great game,’ and kind of keep it moving.’”

Mahomes confirmed that he reached out to Allen after the exchange, not going into detail about that conversation. At his press conference on Wednesday, the Bills quarterback said he understood what transpired in the heat of the moment.

“He reached out to me, and I was just like, ‘It’s football. It’s a game of emotion,’” Allen said, via KROC-TV. “I know he didn’t mean anything by it, and I know the cameras kind of caught the last few seconds of what we were talking about. But he’s an ultimate competitor. He wants to win. That’s why he is who he is.”

Mahomes went on to explain why he felt some remorse surrounding the incident.

“I try to act in a way that I’m a good role model because I looked up to guys on this stage ever since I was a little kid running through the locker room,” he said. “I’m just trying to be a good person. Obviously, I care. My emotions were shown on the football field, which, they’ve been shown in good ways, and obviously, that wasn’t a good way. But, at the end of the day, I’m just trying to be the best person that I can be. The face of the franchise, the NFL stuff, that’s going to come and go, but if I can show the person I am every single day, and that sets an example, that’s what I want to do when my career is over.”

As for his teammates, they liked the fire they saw from Mahomes at the end of the game and the post-game press conference. Perhaps it did not come off the way the quarterback intended, but a solace is that the mindset behind it can be infectious.

“It’s just the drive of Patrick, man,” noted defensive tackle Chris Jones. “We’re all competitive. We all feel a type of way. As much as we try to be professional and not try to show our emotion, at moments and times, sometimes emotions get high. We don’t look at Patrick as nothin’ but a hell of a leader.

“Keep that fire up. Maybe bring it to this game, throughout this week. Keep it up. We love it. We feed off of that. Energy is contagious.”
