Along with 48 apartments, this new building will be the new home of GreenTree Cooperative Grocery. They’ve been serving the community for 50 years and are excited to be moving right downtown.
GreenTree is one of the only grocery stores in Mt. Pleasant that serves natural and organic produce.
“I think people are more health conscious when it comes to what they’re eating and recognizing what they’re putting into their bodies as an effect on how they feel,” says GreenTree General Manager Sarah Christensen.
But Christensen says it’s time to move, and they’re excited to be part of the $18 million development project by Michigan Community Capital.
Eric Hanna, president & CEO of MCC, says, “Whenever you tackle a site like this downtown, you ask, how many public policy objectives can you achieve with a single development?”
The development will be located between Mt Pleasant City Hall and Mountain Town Station. GreenTree grocery will occupy the 10,000 square foot ground floor, compared to their current 1,500 square foot building. As well as adding more parking and a loading deck.
Christensen says, “We’re going to have 52 parking spaces, right now all of our parking is on the street.”
Above the grocery store will be 48 new mixed-income apartments.
“We’re definitely excited to be part of this mixed used development specifically in downtown,” Christensen says. “Just being able to go grab a stick of butter when you run out will be a convenience for the tenants there.”
MCC says its goal is to bring economic stability and vibrancy to Mt. Pleasant for years to come.
“One of the best ways to revitalize a downtown is to get people to live there,” Hanna says.
MCC plans to break ground in March and have the project completed by 2021.
