In Pike County, Illinois, students in John Wood Community College's Agriculture program will soon have a new resource to give them more hands on experience.
Thanks to the Orr Corporation, students will have a new learning facility.
The John Wood Community College Ag Education Center is getting a new multi-purpose facility.
The new facility will go in this field, between the ag center and the Orr research center near Perry, Illinois.
Student Reagan Hoskin said the new facility will bring new hands-on opportunities.
"You're not just getting a stale education, you're getting something new and innovative," Hoskin said.
John Wood Ag Department Chairman Mike Tenhouse said the new 20,000 square foot facility will have more classroom space, a space for livestock expo's and an animal care unit to house livestock.
Hoskin said the new facility will help the next generation of ag students.
"What I think would have been really cool, is if we could have done a research project, with animals, like feeding chicks or something like that, which we don't have the facilities to do right now, but the multi purpose building would allow for it," Hoskin said.
Tenhouse said the new animal care unit in the building will give students a number of opportunities that they haven't had before.
"We'll have a place where we can bring those in, bring in a horse, bring in live animals and keep them periodically so we can keep them for classes," Tenhouse said.
The facility will be operated by JWCC and the University of Illinois and open to the entire ag community.
"That's part of this multi-purpose building, to tie together the hands on part, so they're a more efficient and practical ag college," Hoskin said.
JWCC officials said the nearly $2 million project is privately funded by The Orr Corporation through fundraisers.
The Orr Corporation also owns the beef research farm for students, which is next to the John Wood ag center.
They said they hope to break ground next year and complete it by the end of the 2021.
Orr Corporation is a safety protection corporation that serves some counties in Illinois. It provides a research farm for students, which was originally established in 1978 as a 278-acre agronomy center near Perry.
