C3 Presents And Live Nation To Bring Concerts To New Downtown Amphitheater - KUT

An outdoor amphitheater is opening in Austin this fall and two entertainment companies, C3 Presents and Live Nation Entertainment, are set to bring live music and entertainment to the stage.

Waterloo Greenway Conservancy announced Tuesday it’s partnering with Live Nation and Austin-based C3 for the Moody Amphitheater that’s opening in Waterloo Park. The conservancy received a $15 million grant from the Moody Foundation in 2017 to build the amphitheater, which will be able to hold 5,000 people.

The partnership aims to bring “top music and entertainment talent as well as diverse, community-driven programming” to the theater, according to a press release.

“Waterloo Greenway’s Moody Amphitheater is the venue Austin has been missing for many years,” Charles Attal, a C3 partner, said in the release. “It’s the perfect size for some of today’s hottest touring acts, and with the beautiful urban downtown setting, it will be one of the most special places to see live music in the country.”

The entertainment companies will begin their concert season in spring 2021, bringing about 35 touring artists and local performers to the amphitheater per year. But the space will be put to use before then. When the stage opens this fall, Waterloo Greenway will start using it for community events, including free and low-cost offerings like physical and mental wellness activities and film screenings, according to the release.

Waterloo Greenway is a system of urban parks that will wind along Waller Creek downtown. It’s a public-private partnership between the City of Austin and Waterloo Greenway Conservancy, formerly known as Waller Creek Conservancy. The project is being completed in phases; the first phase being Waterloo Park.

Waterloo Park is the largest park in the system, according to the release, and includes 11 acres of greenspace and 1.5 miles of hike and bike trails. It has been closed since 2011, as plans were developed to revitalize the park. Construction on the project began in 2017 and has seen multiple delays, but it’s set to reopen this year.

Some of the revenue from the amphitheater will support park operations in the Waterloo Greenway, according to the release. And when the theater is not in use, the stage will be open to the public.
