Kent State paying $83,000 to bring Jane Fonda to campus for May 4, 1970 commemoration event - cleveland.com

KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University is paying $83,000 to bring Jane Fonda to campus on May 3 to discuss the 50th commemoration of the May 4, 1970 shootings, in which the Ohio National Guard killed four students and injured nine others when they opened fire on a crowd protesting the Vietnam War.

The university told cleveland.com that Fonda’s speaking fee is consistent with those of other speakers at KSU and other universities. The fee will be covered by unrestricted university funds, and not from tuition dollars, university spokesman Eric Mansfield said.

“With the focus of reconciliation with the past as one of the themes for the 50th commemoration, Jane Fonda brings a lifetime of unique experiences and perspectives to share with our students and community that strongly aligns with that theme,” Mansfield said. “She is equally open about reconciling with some of her past actions while still maintaining true to her convictions and beliefs.”

All 4,000 free tickets to see Fonda speak at 7 p.m. on May 3 at KSU’s Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center were reserved within 36 hours of the event announcement.

The two-time Academy Award winner also came to Kent State in 1971 and 1974 as part of the first and fourth commemorations of the shootings.

Fonda, 82, has been arrested five times over the past few months in Washington, D.C. for protesting in “Fire Drill Fridays,” a series of weekly climate change demonstrations that have garnered celebrity support.

Kent State’s 18-member May 4 Commemoration Advisory Committee, which is made up of students, faculty, university leaders, May 4 witnesses and survivors, previously said that Fonda is a “... fitting voice of activism that spans many generations young and old and aligns with the pillars and vision of the 50th commemoration.”
