For the better part of the last decade, a healthy Eric Gordon has been considered an important factor — if not the X factor — for the New Orleans Pelicans or the Rockets.
Although general manager Daryl Morey said the Rockets “can’t really win the title without Eric being himself,” Gordon is repelling such distinctions as the NBA prepares to return in late July.
“I always make it tough on myself to bring it,” Gordon said. “It’s all about us collectively as a team. I just know when I do well, of course, the team does well.”
Gordon’s field-goal, 3-point and free-throw shooting percentages have all taken a step back this season. He averaged 10.7 points on 32.4 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range in the three March games that preceded the season’s four-month suspension because of COVID-19.
Gordon said he’s excited to restart the season in Orlando, Fla., although he admitted health concerns made it a tough decision whether to play. Several NBA players, including Los Angeles Lakers guard Avery Bradley and Brooklyn Nets center DeAndre Jordan, have opted out of the competition for varying reasons.
Gordon said he worked out by himself before teams returned to their facilities. He also lost weight to help prevent another knee injury, according to the Athletic’s Kelly Iko.
“When you have surgery during the season, it’s always tough,” Gordon said. “But now I’m back to myself and what I should be doing. I’ve been working out on my own, and I’m in pretty good shape and just look forward to really getting back out there.”
Gordon sees consistency and urgency as keys to the Rockets’ success. With just eight “seeding” games being played before the postseason begins, the window doesn’t allow for major stumbles and adjustments.
“We just had an offseason, and now we’re jumping into a season where there’s a short amount of games, and then here comes the playoffs, where it gets real,” Gordon said. “It’s all about who has the best team chemistry to see who wins, because there’s not enough practice. You just have to go out there and bring it.”
