It seems like forever ago, but the Astros cheating scandal dominated the offseason. And when MLB decided to go forward with a 60-game regional schedule, many fans immediately circled the 2017 World Series rematch against the Dodgers as a must-see game with potential for fireworks.

And, well, Tuesday’s meeting didn’t disappoint.

Though much of the early innings of the game went on without incident, Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly saw his fastball command issues in the sixth inning as an opportunity to exact some revenge on the Astros. Kelly threw behind Alex Bregman on a 3-0 pitch, then made several low pick-off attempts at first base.

But the situation escalated after Kelly struck out Carlos Correa to end the inning. Though Astros manager Dusty Baker said that profanity from the Dodgers set off the tensions, a hot-mic breakdown from Jomboy Media — the same folks who exposed much of the Astros cheating —  showed that the chirping started from the Astros dugout and basically led to the near-brawl incident as the inning continued.

According to the raw audio, someone on the Astros yelled at Kelly, “Just get on the mound, little (expletive).”

After Correa’s strikeout, there was some chatter about Kelly being afraid to throw his fastball. Kelly mocked Correa’s swing and made some funny faces. Given the social-distancing guidelines, MLB had warned about harsh penalties for fighting. So, there was some restraint shown in this exchange.

Kelly would leave the game after that one inning of work.

The two teams play again on Wednesday, so we’ll have to see if tensions carry over. But now we have a better idea of what was actually said on Tuesday.
