SAN ANTONIO – A 35-year-old man is dead and another man is in custody following a shooting just east of downtown late Monday night, San Antonio police said.
Bexar County booking records show Alejandro Vargas, 39, has been arrested on a murder charge following the fatal shooting that happened around 9:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Rogers Avenue, not far from Interstate 35 and North Walters Street.
According to police, the victim, Andres Vega, and his wife had gone to the East Side home to pickup her child.
During the exchange, Vega and Vargas got into a verbal altercation, causing Vega to get out of his vehicle. That’s when, police said, the altercation escalated with Vargas allegedly firing a handgun several times.
Authorities say Vega was struck three or four times in the upper chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers answering the call were close by and took Vargas into custody. His bond has been set at $250,000, according to online jail records.
Investigators also found what they believe is the weapon that was used.
There were no other reported injuries, police said.
