MILLBURN, NJ — On a day when the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic made the regular course of celebration impossible, the Millburn/Short Hills Fourth of July Committee still found a way to bring the patriotic spirit to residents in town with a slate of activities and presentations.
Earlier in the day, the committee released a video of the flag-raising ceremony that would have normally taken place that morning, but was pre-taped ahead of time.
In the run-up to the celebration yesterday evening, the committee worked with local business, placing posters in their windows and supplying them items to give away that would help residents celebrate the holiday. The evening's festivities culminated in a series of mini-parades that started simultaneously in neighborhoods around town.
Millburn/Short Hills Fourth of July Committee President Corey Biller said that while the committee could not plan their usual slate, everyone felt it was important to put something together.
We still felt it was very important," Biller said. "The July 4th committee is a non-profit run by all the volunteers who have been putting on that show you described for more than 70 years. And as it became more clear that we couldn't do the traditional show, I just felt that we had to do something for the town.
"The town, and everyone, has been under so much stress, that this was an opportunity to just celebrate, but we wanted to do it in a socially responsible way. and so we started brainstorming ideas and this eventually was what came up."
