BIG RAPIDS — Unable to perform for live audiences, STAGE-M will be bringing theater to area residents' homes with its new radio show "Punchdrunk Fortune."
"This is something we've never done before," Chris Kesting, who wrote the show, said.
With many shows being canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus, Kesting said the local theater group was looking for ways to continue entertaining locals while still abiding by state and health guidelines.
"I think we were all just chomping at the bit to channel our creativity," Kesting said.
Trying to find ways to create a low-cost show without the need to hold live auditions, Kesting said they quickly came up with the idea to do an audio show in the form of an old fashioned radio-era drama.
While set in modern day, Kesting said the three-part audio series will be a comedic spoof of a 1940s radio show.
"The approach we took with it is very stereotypical noir," he said.
The show is free and will be released online beginning in July. However, an official date has not been set.
"This is a free gift to the people in Mecosta County," Kesting said, adding that STAGE-M wanted to thank locals for all their support over the years.
Until the release, Kesting said STAGE-M actors are preparing for the show by rehearsing over Zoom.
However, preparing for an audio show does come with a unique set of challenges cast members have not faced before, such as trying to convey a message through their voices alone, Kesting said.
"They have to kind of rely on tempo and cadence in their voice," he said. "It's kind of neat because it's going to help us be better performers."
While moving to an audio format for their upcoming show, Kesting said STAGE-M hopes to return to live performances in the future when it is safe again to do so.
"We're not done. We're not folding," he said.
