- Georgia Health Information Network (GaHIN), Georgia’s statewide health information exchange (HIE), has enhanced its interoperability after connecting to My Medical Neighborhood Coalition on Health (MMNCH).
GaHIN partnered with MMNCH, a non-profit health information exchange and care coordination organization, to increase the exchange of patient data and boost patient care in the Peach State.
“MMNCH fills an important gap in northwest Georgia, allowing residents there to benefit from providers’ ability to access patient data at the point of care to improve care outcomes and reduce costs,” Pam Matthews, executive operating officer of GaHIN, said in a statement.
“This connection helps facilitate the seamless and secure exchange of patient health information for treatment, payment or operational purposes.”
Mohawk Industries, the world’s largest flooring company, developed MMNCH as part of its employee benefits program to increase care coordination for its employees and families. Mohawk employees can access an extensive network of providers to lower costs and expand coverage.
Mohawk Industries is now attempting to create an HIE across northwest Georgia and southeast Tennessee. Currently, the HIE connects to over 40 medical providers with more than 200 facilities and 11,000 registered individuals.
“The MMNCH HIE links members of the care community in northwest Georgia, allowing them to exchange patient health information and supporting care coordination,” Alex Hutchinson, executive director of MMNCH, said in a statement.
“With our connection to GaHIN, we greatly increase interoperability and gain the ability to exchange information with providers across the state of Georgia as well as surrounding states, while also connecting with five Georgia state agencies.”
Regional HIEs are becoming more prevalent across the country. More than 92 percent of patients are covered by a regional HIE, according to a survey conducted by the Strategic Health Information Exchange Council.
Georgia ConnectedCare, GaHIN’s EHR-integrated interoperability solution, offers providers instant access to patient data from hospitals, state health systems, physician practices, and other health facilities across the state. The HIE exchanges patient medical history, diagnoses, medications, allergies, and lab test results.
Established nearly 20 years ago, GaHIN is a non-profit organization with connections to other statewide HIEs, national HIEs, and federal organizations. The statewide HIE currently connects over 39 million demographic patient records to providers, and it is also a member of both the eHealth Exchange and DirectTrust.
Earlier this year, GaHIE launched a new service that allows medical providers to securely exchange patient lab results, intending to lower provider costs, and improve care quality in Georgia.
This service quickly provides lab results and valuable health information to all connected providers, while also freeing up the provider staff from taking requests to share individual lab results, said the HIE. Additionally, patients no longer have to hand-deliver their lab results to a second provider and it decreases the possibility for duplicate testing, resulting in lower provider costs.
“We are pleased to expand the scope of GaHIN’s interoperable capabilities, but most importantly, provide access to additional patient laboratory results which is vital in the delivery of the best care possible,” Matthews said at the time.
“The ability to easily share a copy of test results across providers avoids unnecessary and duplicate tests while reducing overall costs,” Matthews continued. “Patient satisfaction of the care process improves especially with the avoidance of non-reimbursable test procedures.”
The service is opt-in only, said GaHIN. Providers must complete an electronic authorization on the HIE’s website, or print out a PDF and email it to the HIE.
