Even as the coronavirus pandemic has sidelined travel, kept us from getting together with friends and family, and generally been a real downer on all 2020 plans, there's been one small silver lining that's helped us tolerate it all: being able to get outside in the balmy months of spring and summer.
But fall is here now (many places across the country have even experienced their first snowfalls), and as we all know, winter is coming.
You don't have to resign yourself to months of gloom as you sit indoors, though. We've rounded up creative decor tips from the experts to bring the outdoors in—so you can enjoy the pleasures of nature in your home year-round.
In the bathroom: Conjure up jungle hot spring vibes
You know how spas always feel like some secret corner of an exotic jungle? Well now’s the perfect time to give your bathroom some of that jungle chill, too.
“The most used room in the house often gets the least design attention,” says Michelle Harrison-McAllister of Michelle Harrison Design. “Adding lush bamboo towels, a rustic wood side stool, and some organic art can change your bathroom style to a spalike environment in no time."
Another option is adding a water feature with a serene wall covering. Keep with subtle tones for the best soothing vibes in your bathroom.
In the kitchen: Create garden serenity
“There is so much you can do with fresh spices in the kitchen to really bring the outdoors in,” says home decor stylist Russell Brightwell. “Covering your entire kitchen window with natural wood shelves for your living spice garden is one way to really give it that outdoor feel.”
Another idea: Create a summery display on your favorite island or counter space.
“Kitchens are a family gathering space, and one of the easiest ways to embrace that and create that sort of ambiance is by introducing elements that remind you of the outdoor gatherings that you’ve shared,” says Kobi Karp of Kobi Karp Architecture & Interior Design.
“Something like a decorative picnic basket displaying fruits, for example, is a great and inexpensive way to accomplish this,” adds Karp.
In the living room: Fashion yourself a forest retreat
When it comes to your living room, one of the best ways to bring the outdoors in is by letting in more natural light.
“Change out your window coverings to frame your windows, not cover them,” says Harrison-McAllister. “Anytime you have a view of the outdoors, it’s a positive for overall health.
"When it comes to color palette, use one that really speaks to you and reflects your lifestyle," she adds. "Love to hike? Wood and green tones are for you.”
Shop for key pieces in natural fibers like this rattan floor pouf, macrame wall hangings, and even this live-edge side table.
“Don’t forget your reading nook,” says Harrison-McAllister. “Add a wingback-style chair to create the perfect cocoon feeling for an escape into your favorite read.”
In the bedroom: Take things to the treehouse
Don’t forget about this all-important space when remaking your home into an outdoor haven.
“Your bedroom is a place of refuge and refueling,” says Harrison-McAllister. “Adding a botanical-style, moody wall covering will give you treehouse vibes, safely tucked away for a restful night’s sleep. Be sure not to forget about your sheets, which play a huge role in overall comfort."
Treat yourself to organic bamboo sheets—they’re naturally hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, and eco-friendly.
In the dining room: Create a cozy cabin vibe
“Small elements in the dining space play an important role in contributing to the natural look you’re going for,” says Karp. “Adding jute chairs to the dining room decor, for example, can amplify the earthiness of the space and welcome outdoor elements in. A wood bench combined with these types of chairs also adds some extra coziness to the room.”
