Even during the pandemic, Las Vegas continues to evolve.
Sin City saw the completion of a variety of projects in 2020, even amid all the uncertainty of the novel coronavirus pandemic and more big projects are expected to take shape in 2021.
Here are the properties that wrapped big updates just before the end of the year and the new resorts that are likely to open this year.
Circa Resort & Casino opens hotel, rooftop lounge
Circa Resort & Casino, which opened its gaming floor and other amenities to a long line of guests in late October, opened its 777-room hotel tower tower and rooftop lounge on Dec. 28.
In the hotel tower, there are standard rooms ranging in size from 402 to 752 square feet; suites ranging in size from 822 to 1,612 square feet; and six “Founders Suites” measuring an average of 1,831 square feet, according to a news release.
The basic rooms come with amenities such as refrigerators, dual vanities and 55-inch flat-screen TVs while the lavish Founders Suites offer in-room bars, floor-to-ceiling windows, two flat-screen TVs and a fireplace.
On top of the 60th floor is the 84,000-square-foot Legacy Club. The upscale lounge offers craft cocktails, an outdoor terrace with fire pits and 360 degree views of Las Vegas.
Circus Circus makes changes
Circus Circus Las Vegas added a new thrill ride to its lineup at the Adventuredome in early December.
The ride, dubbed NebulaZ, has eight gondolas that hold four riders each and rotates guests 14 times a minute from 32 feet up in the air, according to a news release from the resort.
The resort also closed its buffet in 2020 and will work on turning that space into a food court, according to a November report from Eater.
In a statement provided to Southern California News Group, casino officials confirmed the planned food court and said the Circus Buffet reopening “is being evaluated, and will open if business demands increase and if it is safe to resume operations in accordance with state regulations and CDC guidelines.”
Virgin Hotels pushes back opening date
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, a new resort property in the former location of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, was scheduled to debut on Jan, 15, 2021, but that date has since been pushed back due to the coronavirus, according to officials from JC Hospitality, the company that owns the property.
“While the entire team at JC Hospitality is beyond excited to introduce the reimagined resort casino to locals and tourists alike, the safety and health of our guests, partners and team members continues to be our top priority,” Richard “Boz” Bosworth, president and CEO of JC Hospitality, said in part of the statement.
Although no new date has been announced, a visit to Virgin Hotels’ website shows that guests can begin booking rooms as early as April 7.
The property will have 1,505 rooms in three towers and will have the first tribally-operated casino in the city with Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, according to a news release. The 60,000-square-foot casino will have slots, table games, high-limit areas and a race and sports book.
The property will also feature a resort pool and a 13,000-square-foot outdoor entertainment space for concerts and events.
Resorts World Las Vegas eyes summer opening
Resorts World, an upcoming resort and casino property, is still targeting a summer 2021 opening, according to press releases on its website.
According to its website, Resorts World will have 3,500 rooms from three different Hilton Brands: Hilton Hotels & Resorts, LXR Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts. It will also have 117,000 square feet of gaming, including slots, table games, a dedicated poker room and high-limit areas.
People have been able to apply for jobs via a website since November and the resort is expected to employ 6,000 people.
More construction on the MSG Sphere
The MSG Sphere at The Venetian, a more than 17,000-seat sphere-shaped entertainment center from Madison Square Garden with a 2023 completion date, has already been under construction and visitors to Las Vegas will see it continue to rise in 2021.
MSG Entertainment said in a news release that “significant progress” has been made on the sphere this year. Construction of the structure’s steel domed roof will begin in early 2021, according to the release.
