QUINCY, IL. (WGEM) -- Quincy tourism officials say sports tournaments are serving as a lifeline for the local tourism industry as they bring hundreds of people to the area.
Officials with Q-Town tournaments say they have tournaments scheduled about every other weekend through July.
Many of these teams come from out of town, which gives the local tourism industry an opportunity to bring in revenue at a time when they're still trying to recover.
“All their parents, grandma and grandpa come, the siblings. Teams that are coming from out of town – they’re booking rooms for 10 or 15 families for the weekend, so we’re really bringing people to Quincy," Darin Dodd, Q-Town Tournaments founder and director.
Hotels in Quincy say they’re already seeing a boost from baseball teams booking rooms.
Manager Deb Carstens says the Fairfield Inn and other local hotels already have teams booking rooms for tournaments throughout the summer. She says having many tournaments scheduled is helping her industry get back on track because it's the only consistent business that they're getting right now.
“A weekend event like a wedding or something is great to have. Don’t get me wrong, we’re glad to have them back. But when you’re looking at something that is so reoccurring, that’s bringing new people into our town week in and week out, to secure that business for an entire summer is incredible," Carstens said.
Carstens says for hotels, normal travel for business trips and summer vacations aren't back to pre-pandemic levels yet, so these tournaments are helping fill in those gaps.
This doesn’t just benefit hotels. Carstens says teams also visit restaurants and grocery stores while they’re in town.
