Seems like a good thing to be bringing our troops home from Afghanistan. Let’s go even further and bring home the 500 troops still in Bosnia for decades.
And speaking of our military in foreign lands, we still have, apparently, 34,000 troops in South Korea. We could fix lots of roads and bridges with that expense eliminated. Just doing the math. We’ve had them there for over 65 years. Think of the cost.

No positives about perpetrators
If the recently concluded trial of Derek Chauvin did nothing else, it showed the value of focusing on the victim, George Floyd.
Why, then, do Pioneer Press editors evidently continue to think it is OK to feature positive “tidbits” about a perpetrator’s life when their writers recap a violent crime? On April 22, a short article in the paper identified the man who bled to death earlier this month after he broke a window in an attempt to continue assaulting his girlfriend because she made a phone call. He had, according to police, held a gun to her head and choked her before she was able to flee to a neighbor’s home. He followed her and broke the window, cutting his arm in the process.
Yes, his death as a result of some really bad decisions is sad for his family. However, his victim will be traumatized as a result of his actions for a long time. I don’t care that the deceased played football or was active in a family business. I wouldn’t even care if he had once stood on the corner of Fourth Street and Wabasha in downtown St. Paul balancing a penny on his nose for two hours. His actions toward this woman were appalling. He and others who commit violent crimes against the innocent and/or the helpless do not deserve to have any attention called to the life they used to lead.
