Blue Jays Bring Out the Bats in 15-1 Thrashing of Angels - Full Press Coverage

Due to inclement weather, the Toronto Blue Jays were forced to wait two hours and 38 minutes prior to opening pitch on Saturday’s third matchup of a four-game set between the Jays and the Los Angeles Angels.

Not normally having to deal with rain delays when playing out of their home ballpark of Rogers Centre back in Canada, the Jays, of course, are hosting home games out of TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida until cross-border travel reopens.

But clearly, the downtime worked to Toronto’s benefit on Saturday.

Highlighted by a seven-run second inning that saw each of Santiago Espinal, Jonathan Davis, Danny Jansen, Bo Bichette, Randal Grichuk, Josh Palacios and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cross home plate, the Jays added another three runs in the third inning and another five in the bottom of the fifth. As a matter of fact, the first four innings of the game took over two hours to play.

Starting pitcher Steven Matz saw his record improve to 2-0 on the season, while giving up just one run and five hits over six innings of work. Los Angeles’ José Quintana (0-1) gave up seven runs on five hits and four walks in one and 2/3 innings of use. Anthony Rendon delivered the Angels’ only run of the game on a home run off reliever Tommy Milone in the top of the ninth.

“We know this lineup is really, really good, and so it’s fun to see them gel together,” Matz said.

Palacios led the way for the Blue Jays with four hits, while Espinal had three. Bo Bichette delivered a career-high five RBIs and extended his hit streak to eight games, while Guerrero and Grichuk each had three RBIs in the lopsided victory. Guerrero has now reached based in all nine games this season. Grichuk leads the Jays with 11 RBIs on the year.

Toronto finished the game with 15 runs scored on 14 hits and nine walks.  It was the first time the team had recorded over nine hits in a game this season.

“We all needed a night like this,” manager Charlie Montoyo added. “Not a late night like this, but a night at the plate like that – Great at-bats, the walks, the guys were patient.”

Coming off a four-game losing streak, the Jays improved to 1-2 on their current four-game test with the Angels that sees the series finale from Dunedin on Sunday. After starting the season 3-1, the team has now found itself sitting at 4-5 through nine games. Tanner Roark (0-1) will take to the mound against Alex Cobb (0-0) on Sunday afternoon.

Toronto is now halfway through a deadly stretch of 16 games in 16 days (3-5) to which the club next hosts the New York Yankees for three games, before heading to Kansas City for four.

Doing so without a host of starting position players and key contributing pitchers has not been easy, but according to Montoyo, there has not been “any signs of panic” within the clubhouse.

“Whenever we’re healthy and the lineup gets back together, we’re going to hit,” Montoyo added following Saturday’s late-night victory. “I think everybody knows that. It’s coming. Hitting’s contagious. Whenever one guy gets hot the next guy will too… It’s normal stuff. Whenever a lineup struggles, people put more pressure on themselves and that’s what’s going on right now.”

Currently, without George Springer, Teoscar Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Nate Pearson, Robbie Ray, Ryan Borucki, Thomas Hatch, Tyler Chatwood, and Kirby Yates, the Jays will look to keep things rolling as best they can with the contributions continuing from replacement position players Espinal, Davis and Palacios.

And if Saturday was any indication, those contributions should be expected from each and every spot in the lineup.
