In the hours before a nor’easter is set to hit New England, more specific expectations about the winter storm have become available.
The storm is expected to bring widely varying precipitation amounts to Massachusetts, with some parts of the state to see more than a half foot of snow while other communities can expect only rain.
Here’s a look at the latest snowfall projections and expected storm timing, as of Thursday evening.
How much snow?
Central and Western Massachusetts can expect snow tomorrow while little-to-no accumulation is expected in Eastern Massachusetts.
In the Berkshires, 3 to 4 inches of snow is expected in North Adams while 3 to 4 inches is predicted for Pittsfield and 2 to 3 in Great Barrington.
Just east, higher snowfall is expected. Up to 10 inches of snowfall is possible in communities above 1,500 feet of elevation, the National Weather Service said.
In the Pioneer Valley, expected amounts vary. As of just after 9 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service updated its forecast to 3 to 4 inches in Greenfield, 2 to 3 in Springfield and 1 to 2 in Amherst.
In Central Massachusetts, the forecast varies. Fitchburg may see 6 to 8 inches while further south in Worcester 2 to 3 is expected.

How much rain?
In Eastern Massachusetts, rain is in the forecast. Massachusetts is expected to see up to 3 inches of rain in coming days, a welcome forecast with roughly 20% of Massachusetts in a state of moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

When will it start?
While it has already begun raining across the state, expect rain to shift to snow in Central and Western Massachusetts after midnight.
Snow is expected again in parts of the state when temperatures dip back down Friday evening.

Snow will stop falling in some communities by 8 a.m. Others can expect snow through Friday evening.
