NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) & SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - A good old fashioned April snowstorm is expected to impact the area as we head through Thursday and into the day on Friday as areas of snow and potentially some heavy snow will be possible across parts of western Nebraska. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in place across the coverage area through Thursday night and into Friday evening. For North Platte, a Winter Weather Advisory is in place through 7 PM on Friday evening. Areas across the Panhandle are under Winter Storm Warnings through 6 PM MDT on Friday, and it’s across the Panhandle that we’re expecting to see the heaviest snowfall potential.
As we go through Thursday evening, areas of rain mixed with snow are expected to spread across western Nebraska and as temperatures continue to fall into Thursday night, we should see a transition to mainly all snow overnight and into Friday morning. Into the day on Friday as temperatures rise, we could again see a little bit of a wintry mix, with a cold rain possible by Friday afternoon. Into Friday evening as the low pressure system bringing us our wintry weather dives south of the area, we should see moisture come to an end across western Nebraska.
When it’s all said and done, we could see some areas of heavy snow for parts of western Nebraska, particularly in the Panhandle where up to around 10″ of snow will be possible. North Platte will likely see around 2″ to 5″ of snow by the time the snow stops falling.
All the meanwhile it will be cold as we head into the day on Friday. Temperatures this time of year should be in the low to mid 60s but it will be much colder than that into Friday. Low temperatures in the morning are expected to dip into the 20s to low 30s for most of us, but with north and northeast winds at around 10 to 15 MPH it will feel much colder with wind chills teens to lower 20s.
With clouds, snow, and rain on Friday, it will be a very chilly day with afternoon temperatures only reaching the 30s to low 40s for most, but again with north winds at 10 to 15 MPH, wind chills will likely be in the 20s across the region to finish the week.
Mainly dry weather is expected into the weekend and temperatures should try and rebound a bit. Saturday still looks a bit chilly with highs in the mid to upper 40s with mostly cloudy skies. Sunday is likely the warmest day out of the next week with highs around 60°. Another cold front will bring cooler weather, with perhaps another chance for rain and snow early next week.
