Hamas released a tape of an alleged Israeli prisoner in Hamas captivity saying he is in "the captivity of the Al-Qassam Brigades," and that he "dies every day," on the Al-Jazeera news network late Sunday night. Israel's defense establishment is investigating the matter, Walla news reported.
The mother of Israeli citizen and Hamas hostage Avera Mengistu responded to the recording, saying that she heard it like everyone else and that she's certain it's not her son's voice. "I am waiting for my son and hope to meet him soon, like they have always promised me," She added.

The recording was released just as Marwan Issa, the deputy of Hamas' military wing commander, Mohammed Deif, was interviewed Sunday evening for the first time since the end of Operation Guardian of the Walls on Al-Jazeera, with his face blurred.Issa talked about the prisoner exchange deal and revealed information regarding the captivity of Gilad Schalit, who was held by Hamas for 5 years, from 2006-2011. He was captured by Hamas militants in a cross-border raid via underground tunnels. He gained his freedom during a prisoner exchange, where Israel released 1,027 prisoners in return for Schalit.
"Hamas is in distress after the heavy blows it received in Operation Guardian of the Walls and is attempting cheap and transparent manipulation here," the Israeli government's coordinator for prisoners and missing persons, Yaron Blum, commented on Hamas' released information.

"Israel is well aware of the plight of the sons Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, may their memories be blessed, and of the two citizens Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed who crossed the border still alive," Blum said.
"The State of Israel will continue to act with determination and responsibility for the return of sons and citizens," he concluded.
In his interview with Al-Jazeera, Issa revealed that after the abduction of Schalit, a number of mediators from the Palestinian Authority and Egypt contacted them to release Schalit.
"We moved him from place to place to guard him. The PA and Egypt tried to end the affair quietly."
He said they had passed incorrect information about Schalit's location in the Gaza Strip.
"Gaza Brigadier General Bassem Issa is the one who set up the shadow unit and had the most important role in hiding Gilad Schalit," he said.  Issa also revealed that "more than once, Israel has tried to kidnap senior Hamas figures, including Ahmad Jabari and Ra'ed Al-Attar, and offered large sums of money to anyone who would bring information about Schalit and failed."
In addition, he also referred to the recent battle between Israel and Hamas and said that "in the last operation we were united, we acted against the enemy in the campaign for Jerusalem and al-Aqsa, and we also acted on the issue of the prisoner exchange deal."
"We have bargaining chips to complete a respectable prisoner exchange deal, and the inmates are the most important thing that is now on the table," he added. Yvette J. Deane contributed to this report.
