The La Porte County Public Library now has an innovative annex just a half block from its main location in La Porte: the LPCPL Exchange at 807 Indiana Ave.

The historic building in which the exchange is located states “TELEPHONE” in its entranceway masonry, a lasting reminder of its 1876 start as the town’s General Telephone headquarters for operators.
While the Exchange honos the building’s origins, its contents all point to the present and future with meeting rooms, studios, machines, tools and more all available for free to the public.
“The Exchange is a multi-use community space dedicated to connecting people and ideas while removing barriers to equipment access,” according to a library press release. “Community members can reserve study spaces, use open seating, or use a variety of equipment free of charge.”
That equipment includes power tools such as wood lathes and table saws, 3-D printers, sewing machines, design software, soldering equipment, a milling machine, and more.

“La Porte County Public Library is a place of equitable access for our community,” said library Director Fonda Owens. “We wanted to create a place for the community to connect with others, enhance their job skills, discover new hobbies, start businesses, and much more.”
Community members may visit the LPCPL Exchange for tours. Library employees and volunteers will lead classes to familiarize interested community members with available equipment. Community members may also reserve equipment for use once they have completed the appropriate safety training. For more information on hours and tours, visit laportelibrary.org or call 219-344-5895.
