High temperatures bring good news for some businesses, caution to outdoor enthusiasts - The Daily Camera

The weather in Boulder County is entering the higher 90s for most of the week, which means it could potentially set heat records, benefit some area businesses and require precautions when people go outside.

Jim Kalina, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said that while the temperatures the county is experiencing now are hot, they’re not abnormal.

“We’ve seen heat like this in the past,” he said. “Some years it’s not as hot; some years it’s even hotter.”

Still, Kalina said, Boulder County could break a heat record on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to be about 97 degrees. The previous record was 94 degrees set in 1977.

“There is definitely the possibility that we could break a couple of records in the next few days,” he said.

The warmer temperatures have actually been beneficial to several area businesses, whose operations spike during the summer months.

Josh Gatz is the owner of Whitewater Tubing and Recreation, a Boulder watersport rental shop, which is only open from May through September. Gatz said his store has benefited from the combination of a wet spring and an early hot summer.

“All the rain that we got was obviously a good thing, it did fill up the reservoir a little bit quicker,” Gatz said.

He also said the heat has been able to encourage people to take advantage of the fuller bodies of water, which bodes well for his business.

The only issue, Gatz said, was the snow in the mountains melted quickly, which meant water levels were currently too high to safely tube down Boulder Creek.

“We get this every June, there’s usually a 7-to-10-day stretch (where tubing isn’t safe), it’s just going to be a little bit longer this year,” he said.

Whitewater Tubing isn’t the only business that has done well because of the weather. Sweet Cow, a local ice cream chain in Boulder County and Denver, is also making the most of the heat.

Drew Honness, the founder of Sweet Cow, said the timing of the higher temperatures has been great for his stores.

“We have the combination of school letting out two weeks ago and now this. It makes us pretty busy,” Honness said.

Additionally, he said, his shops have opened to indoor customers for the first time in 15 months.

“We were super elated with how our sales progressed last week,” he said.

While Gatz and Honness both said there was some benefit to the heat, they acknowledged that staying safe in higher temperatures should be a priority for residents.

The National Weather Service and Kalina have some advice when it comes to avoiding the risks of hot weather.

“Staying inside; stay out of the heat if possible,” Kalina said.

If someone does go outside, he recommends drinking enough water and being prepared for the heat.

Kalina said this heatwave won’t last forever. The weather service forecasts a cool front that could lower the temperatures into the 70s.

“(In the) very short term, (the heat) is going to continue, but in another week or so, it looks like we could see some relief,” he said.
