Juneteenth celebration at McMillen Park wraps up week of events to bring 'unity to the community' - Fort Wayne's NBC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- Hundreds of people gathered at McMillen Park Saturday to celebrate Juneteenth.

The celebration comes just two days after President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth an officials federal holiday.

Juneteenth falls on June 19 and celebrates the official end of slavery.

Saturday's event had singing, dancing, bounce houses and vendors. More than 30 organizations helped put on the event.

"This is a time as it's always been to celebrate ourselves, educate ourselves and organize ourselves in order to heal," Juneteenth Collaborative executive director Adrian Curry said.

Curry said the main goat is to bring unity to the community.

"We need to flow of energy to move with ease between not only internally with in the community, but between communities," Curry said. "We need the life giving force to run through our streets, run through each other to bring us together."

Curry said he's stunned by Saturday's turn out and hope's next year's celebration can draw an even bigger crowd.
