DETROIT -- Buck is back.
The Detroit Tigers have selected the contract of veteran right-handed reliever Buck Farmer from Triple-A Toledo.
Farmer takes the place of Beau Burrows, who was optioned to Toledo following Saturday’s game.
Farmer was designated for assignment on May 7 after a rocky start to 2021 season in which he allowed 15 runs on 15 hits, including six home runs, in 10 2/3 innings. He walked nine and struck out 10.
After clearing waivers, Farmer was outrighted to Toledo, where he had a rocky start, but has pitched well of late. He has thrown 6 1/3 scoreless innings without a walk in his last four outings.
Farmer, 30, has pitched in at least part of the last eight seasons for the Tigers since making his Major League debut in 2014 only one year after being drafted out of Georgia Tech. After beginning his career as a starter, Farmer settled into a relatively reliable role in the bullpen for the last three years.
Farmer is being paid $1.85 million this year whether he’s in Toledo or Detroit, so the Tigers would certainly prefer that investment being applied to the big-league club.
“He absolutely can get an opportunity to come back up here,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after Farmer cleared waivers last month. “He’s been a reliable reliever before. We’ve get a reset with him and get him back to executing pitches and, quite honestly, just give him a breather. Just give him a different setting, a different look.
“He’ll go back and establish his fastball. Obviously, he needs to use all of his pitches. But this is more of a reset for him. We’re fortunate from an organizational standpoint that he stayed with us and we get a chance to get him all squared away so he can come back and help us again.”
