SF Giants bring Tyler Beede back to majors, DFA reliever amid flurry of roster moves - Vacaville Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — Tyler Beede’s long road back from Tommy John surgery has finally led to 24 Willie Mays Plaza.

More than 15 months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right arm, the former first round draft pick has been reinstated to the 40-man roster and joined the Giants at Oracle Park on Tuesday.

“It’s a great opportunity for (Beede),” manager Gabe Kapler said. “He’s going to be here and he’s going to be available to us ready for action for the next couple of days. It’s really exciting because I think he has a chance to impact us in a number of different ways.”

To clear a roster spot for Beede, the Giants designated reliever Jimmie Sherfy for assignment.

The club also made another transaction Tuesday as outfielder Jaylin Davis was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and recalled infielder Jason Vosler from Triple-A Sacramento. Davis injured his hamstring while running out a groundball in Monday’s 5-3 loss to the Cardinals.

“I think Jaylin is very disappointed and I’m personally pretty disappointed for Jaylin,” Kapler said. “I thought his at-bats were much better. I don’t think he had the greatest results, but I thought he looked different and looked more confident.”

Beede began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento in May, but like many pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery, the righty has struggled with control and issued 32 walks in 35 1/3 innings over 12 starts. The Vanderbilt product has walked at least three batters in five consecutive rehab outings, but has also averaged more than a strikeout per inning with the River Cats.

“His control was not great on this rehab assignment, but we feel like this extra adrenaline may help his focus and it gives him a chance to really find that control,” Kapler said. “As his control improves, we also think his command has a chance to improve. We think about control as getting in the zone and staying in the zone and that ability and command more is moving the ball around the zone.”

The Giants are down three starting pitchers after the club placed left-hander Sammy Long on the injured list Monday with a lower back strain, so Beede could be a candidate to take Long’s turn in the rotation on Friday when the club hosts the Washington Nationals.

Right-hander Logan Webb (shoulder strain) was scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, but Webb did not travel to Las Vegas for an appearance that was set to last three innings and 45 pitches. Kapler said Webb is in “A-plus” physical condition and could be activated within the next few days, so he’s also a consideration to start on Friday.

Another injured righty, Aaron Sanchez (bicep strain) threw two innings and 40 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday and could resume a rehab assignment in the near future. Sanchez landed on the injured list with the bicep strain, but had his rehab assignment paused due to blister issues on his pitching hand.

“(Sanchez’s) curveball is best when it’s in the middle of the plate, like (Kevin) Gausman’s split,” Kapler said. “It’s an easy pitch to lay off if he leaves it glove or arm side, but it’s really a vertical-style of pitch so whenever it’s in the middle of the plate it’s a good swing and miss weapon for him.”
