BROCTON — Earlier this month, the village of Brocton dealt with three water main breaks in one day. Crews were out attempting to fix the breaks and filling in holes well into the night, and the Village Board showed their appreciation for the wastewater department and sewer department at their meeting on Wednesday night.

“It was actually one leak and two mistakes,” said Brocton Mayor Art Miller. “I took all the books we have and made copies of them. They’re going to be clearer to read. From this point on, we’re going to be able to find something quicker and better.”

One resident in attendance said that when he left the scene, individuals were still out there working well past 11:30 the night of the breaks.

Miller offered his appreciation for the crews involved with the work to fix the issue but expressed unhappiness with how the problem went down. In particular, Miller voiced displeasure with Chadwick Bay Intermunicipal Water Works and expressed that he is looking at other alternatives for water services.

“Somebody said one of the valves got shut off,” Miller said. “I know that’s crap. Nothing was tried. And the one on Kinney Street was turned on but it’s a dead line. There’s a lot to this situation with (Chadwick Bay water). I’m not really happy with the water situation with these people. We are working on talking about something with Portland. We’re going to go around and start locating valves, so this doesn’t happen again.”

Miller said he has looked into getting a grant for changing the line on Central Avenue, and although it will take a year or more to get fixed, it is a priority for Miller to be able to improve the village how he wants.

“I’m going to battle with them,” Miller said. “That line is going to be a nightmare all winter. The Health Department guy was there at our last water meeting, and he put the writing on the wall with (Chadwick Bay).”
