The Dodgers’ 2021 season began with the rarity of having three MVPs on the same team — Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger. Now there’s a new rarity of stars aligning.

After acquiring 37-year-old Max Scherzer in a trade with Washington on Friday and teaming him with the 33-year-old Kershaw, the Dodgers are the second team with a pair of three-time Cy Young Award winners on the same pitching staff.

The 1986 Chicago White Sox began their season with four-time winner Steve Carlton and three-time winner Tom Seaver — each 41 years old that season.

This Dodger team is the first to feature multi-Cy Young Award winners since the 2005-07 New York Mets had three-time winner Pedro Martinez and two-time honoree Tom Glavine.

This mega-power Dodger connection between two future Hall of Fame pitchers also features two players who have similar paths and accomplishments, beginning with launching points.

Scherzer made his Major League debut April 29, 2008. Clayton Kershaw made his debut 26 days later.

Since 2008, Kershaw leads all pitchers in both Baseball Reference’s and Fangraphs’ versions of wins above replacement: 68.9 bWAR and fWAR. Then comes Justin Verlander (64.3/65.2) and Scherzer (62.7/63.0).

Kershaw, the seventh overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, has 184 career wins, has led his league in wins three times, has three league strikeout titles and is one of 19 pitchers all time to strike out at least 300 batters in a season.

Scherzer, the 11th overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, has 183 career wins, led his league in wins four times, has three league strikeout titles and is also one of 19 pitchers all time to strike out at least 300 batters in a season.

Scherzer, by game score, has the best pitched game of the 21st century. On Oct. 3, 2015, he earned a 104 game score with a no-hitter: nine innings, no hits, no walks, no runs, 17 strikeouts. The lone baserunner reached on an error.

Kershaw owns the second-best pitched game. On June 18, 2014, he earned a 102 game score with a no-hitter: nine innings, no hits, no walks, no runs, 15 strikeouts. The lone baserunner reached on an error.

The two aces have dominated, but most notably against batters with the same handedness.

Since 2008, 63 pitchers have faced at least 2,500 left-handed batters. The left-handed Kershaw has the lowest left-handed opponents’ batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS: .193/.243/.317/.560. Left-handers are batting .152/.195/.196/.391 against Kershaw this season.

Since 2008, 119 pitchers have faced at least 2,500 right-handed batters. The right-handed Scherzer has the lowest right-handed opponents’ batting average, on-base percentage and second-lowest OPS: .199/.245/.580. Right-handers are batting .198/.246/.406/.651 against Scherzer this season.

If we look at their 10-year peak, there are other similarities:

Scherzer became a World Series champion in 2019. Kershaw became one in 2020. Now, this dream combination helps better position the Dodgers to win one in 2021.
