Cornerback Mac McCain III must be piling up the frequent flyer miles because he has had to go back and forth between Philadelphia and Denver.
The Eagles announced Wednesday that they had claimed McCain off waivers. McCain had rejoined the Denver Broncos before they played the Eagles in Week 10 but waived him on Tuesday.
McCain, who is still a rookie, went undrafted out of North Carolina A&T but signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent.
After being among the final cuts the Broncos made, McCain signed a contract to be on their practice squad. Wanting to add to their secondary depth, the Eagles signed McCain off the Broncos practice squad Oct. 7.
McCain was inactive for most of the season but did get special teams snaps in the Week 3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles released McCain Nov. 9 in what appeared to be a move to make space to elevate running back Jordan Howard to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.
NJ Advance Media’s Mike Kaye previously reported that the Eagles wanted to sign McCain on their practice squad when they released him, hoping he would clear waivers. However, the Broncos claimed McCain.
Adding McCain back to the roster makes sense that McCain already knows the defensive and special team schemes and can fill in if an injury occurs at the cornerback position. McCain could also be a potential replacement next year at the outside cornerback position, given that Steve Nelson is a free agent after this season and could sign elsewhere.
McCain joins a crowded young defensive backfield that includes fellow young corners Tay Gowan, Josiah Scott, and Zech McPherson. The Eagles have dedicated a lot of resources and roster space to shore up that defensive backfield.
Although McCain has not seen significant time on the field at cornerback, the Eagles seemingly are using this season as a “redshirt” year, letting McCain get more experience after opting out of the 2020 season at North Carolina A&T.
