High winds bring widepread outages - WCAX

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Thousands of Vermonters were without power Friday as high winds brought widespread outages.

As of noon, utilities reported more than 9,100 customers are affected, mostly in Chittenden, Addison, and Rutland Counties.

Winds knocked down trees and power lines in the Essex area, causing outages. Among those without power were Essex Elementary, Founders Memorial, and Essex Middle Schools. The outage only lasted about an hour, according to school officials. It was confined to the east campus located in Essex Town, which houses those three schools and the central administration office.

School officials say outages rarely impact school hours but when they do it’s all hands on deck to figure out the best moves for keeping students safe. “They have to get very creative and start to do some creative thinking and working with the students. But also it’s keeping the students calm, they get scared especially when you’re talking to elementary, pre-school ages, so the teachers have to work hard with the kids to keep them calm and keep the activities fun and light,” said Essex Westford School District’s Garry Scott.

Green Mountain Power says a downed pole in a remote area was another cause for lost power in some parts of Essex. “The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory yesterday and that’s pretty much what we saw today. Crews have been out since early this morning as high gusty winds tore down trees and powerlines knocking down power. They’ve been out in these really tough conditions since early this morning and so far have returned power to more than 16,000 customers,” said GMP’s Kristin Kelly.

Officials in the Hanover area also reported trees down and flooding on roadways throughout the Upper Valley.

Our weather team says the cold front will be sweeping across the state through mid-afternoon along with It will be some heavy downpours and possibly thunder in southern counties. Conditions are expected to clear later Friday before a trailing trough brings more showers and colder weather over the weekend.
