Plunging temperatures, high winds will bring lake effect snow to Upstate New York - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A cold front barrels through Upstate New York today, dropping temperatures by nearly 30 degrees in 20 hours and generating lake effect snow.

Syracuse hit 61 degrees this morning, but will fall to 33 by Friday morning. That cold air blowing over the Great Lakes will bring an inch or two to Central New York and up to 8 inches on the Tug Hill plateau, downwind of Lake Ontario, the National Weather Service predicts.

The weather service has issued a winter weather advisories for Tug Hill and the higher elevations of Western New York, where up to 6 inches of snow could blow in off Lake Erie.

“Travel could be very difficult,” said the advisories, in effect from 7 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Friday. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.”

A lesser hazardous weather outlook is in place for Central New York.

“Light snow will develop tonight and could produce a quick 1 to 2 inches in some of the higher elevations of Central New York,” the weather service said. “Be aware of potentially slippery roads.”

Wind gusts of 30 mph or more could blow around that fresh snow, reducing visibility for drivers on their way to work Friday morning.

Syracuse has had just 0.3 inches of snow so far this month, below the normal of 3.6 inches at this point in the season.
