wins Tribe contest
PEMBROKE — The chair of the Education Committee of the Lumbee Tribal Council called on her fellow council members Thursday to help fund a billboard displaying art by a high school tribal member.
The action was prompted after Yvonne Dial announced Keely Renee Oxendine as the winner of the tribe’s Creative Art Contest sponsored by the tribe.
The theme for the Creative Art Competition was “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.”
Oxendine was declared the overall winner and won $120 in the art competition for her artistry depicting six murdered and missing indigenous women in Robeson County.

ROTC cadets
honor veterans
LUMBERTON — Lumberton High Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets worked Thursday to clean up Meadowbrook Cemetery as part of its service learning project to aid the community and honor fallen veterans.
The service project will continue in the coming weeks to clean multiple cemeteries including Hollywood and Elizabeth Heights cemeteries, according to Kenneth Sinclair, adjutant for VFW Post 8969. During the project, students will work to clean head stones and areas around graves.
Sinclair said he hopes the students learn the importance of honoring veterans and “taking pride in your community” upon completion of the project.

Man charged with
dumping trash
ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office have charged a Hope Mills man with illegally dumping an enormous amount of trash on private property.
Malcolm Clement Williams, 53, is charged with one count of felony littering. He is accused of dumping 12.58 tons of debris in the front yard of an abandoned home located at 158 Brewington Ave. in the Philadelphia Community.
Residents allegedly observed Williams in the act on Nov. 11 and reported it to law enforcement.

Kiwanis Club
honors Ussery
LUMBERTON — Kiwanis of Robeson-Lumberton’s lunch meeting honored Kiwanian Ralph Ussery.
Earlier in the lunch meeting, Kiwanis presented a Life Member Award to Ussery, who has been a member of Kiwanis of Lumberton and Kiwanis of Robeson-Lumberton since 1962.
Ussery has previously served Kiwanis in leadership as club president and as lieutenant governor. Ussery has been “very active” in programs and service opportunities to help the youth and children of Robeson County.
He has been a key figure in assisting with Kiwanis of Robeson-Lumberton Annual Pancake Festival through the years.
