Canucks bring in Bruce Boudreau as new coach amid front-office changes: Sources - The Athletic

A shakeup is afoot in Vancouver's front office following a disappointing start to the season, as the team announced a series of leadership and coaching changes early Monday morning. The Canucks are bringing in Bruce Boudreau on a two-year deal, sources told The Athletic on Sunday night, to replace Travis Green, who is out as head coach.

General manager Jim Benning, assistant GM John Weisbrod and assistant coach Nolan Baumgartner were also relieved of their duties. Stan Smyl, who has served as senior adviser to the GM since the 2008 season, will take over as interim GM. Ryan Johnson, who has been the GM for Vancouver's AHL club, is being promoted to assistant GM.

"These are difficult decisions, but we believed we would have a competitive group this year," Canucks chairman Francesco Aquilini said in a statement. "As a result, I'm extremely disappointed in how the team has performed so far. I'm making these changes because we want to build a team that competes for championships and it's time for new leadership to help take us there.

Including Saturday night's 4-1 loss to the Penguins, the Canucks have lost 10 of their last 13 games and are 8-15-2 this season, last in the Pacific Division.

A Toronto native, Boudreau, 66, last coached in the NHL in 2019-20, when he was fired by the Minnesota Wild 57 games into his fourth season. He’s compiled a 567-302-115 record in 984 games with the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks and the Wild over parts of 13 seasons, winning the 2007-08 Jack Adams Award and leading the Caps and Ducks to four straight playoff appearances each.

As a player, Boudreau played professionally for 20 seasons, logging 141 games in the NHL with the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks and 30 games with the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the World Hockey Association.

He is currently an analyst for NBC Washington’s Capitals games and for the NHL Network. Boudreau and his wife, Crystal, purchased the Hershey Cubs, a junior team that’s playing its inaugural season in the United States Premier Hockey League in 2021-22. They also own the USPHL's Minnesota Blue Ox.
