Sunday's game is an Exam Break Game for UNC students, with free blue books and scantrons, as well as free Purple Bowl for the first 100.
The JMU game is the first of three straight at home for Carolina. Next up is UNC Asheville on Dec. 12 then Jacksonville on Dec. 15 before the Tar Heels travel to Boston College for the Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Dec. 19.
Notable
• Carolina is off to the 16th 7-0 start in program history (the second in three years under coach Courtney Banghart), but the first time ever that five of those wins have come away from home.
• UNC is currently receiving votes in both the AP and coaches' polls. The Tar Heels were last ranked in the 2015-16 preseason, when they were 22nd in the AP poll and 20th in the coaches' poll to start the year.
• Junior Eva Hodgson comes into Sunday's game nine points away from reaching 1,000 for her career. She scored 914 in her two seasons playing at William & Mary, including 53 points over four matchups with JMU.
» Sophomore Alyssa Ustby leads the ACC in double-doubles with four in this season's seven games. She's 14th in the nation in that category.
UNC vs. JMU
• UNC leads the overall series, which dates back to the 1976-77 season, 2-1.
• The last meeting was in the 2013-14 season, when the Dukes traveled to Chapel Hill for a matchup on Jan. 2, 2014. UNC won 74-71 in its final tune-up before starting ACC play.
• Although no Tar Heel has faced JMU, junior Eva Hodgson played against the Dukes four times while she competed for William & Mary in 2018-19 and 2019-20. Although the Tribe fell all four times, Hodgson averaged 13.3 ppg. She scored 20 in both of the matchups in 2020, her sophomore season.
• Two Tar Heels will face off against former teammates on Sunday. UNC's Malu Tshitenge and JMU's Jaylin Carodine were high school teammates at St. John's College, and Carolina's Anya Poole and JMU's Jamia Hazell played together at Southeast Raleigh High School.
Scouting the Dukes
James Madison is 3-4 on the season following a 54-50 loss at George Washington on Thursday. The trip to Chapel Hill is JMU's third road game in a row.
• The Dukes opened the season with an ACC opponent, hosting Virginia on Nov. 9. JMU won that game 84-69.
• Kiki Jefferson leads JMU in scoring with 15.9 points per game. She's one of three Dukes in double figures, along with Peyton McDaniel (12.0) and Rayne Tucker (11.5). Jefferson is also the team's top rebounder with 8.8 boards per game.
• Jefferson ranks sixth in the nation in free throws made this season with 45, almost four times as many as the team's next-highest total (Jaylin Carodine with 12). In comparison, the Tar Heels' high is 29 by Deja Kelly.
Numbers of Note
• After playing 39 minutes at Minnesota, sophomore Alyssa Ustby is now averaging 30.8 minutes per game. She's the only Tar Heel averaging more than 30 minutes.
• UNC held its first six opponents to single-digit scoring in the first quarter: NC A&T 8, Charlotte 3, App. State 4, TCU 8, VCU 9, Washington 9. With 17 points, Minnesota was the first foe to reach double digits in Q1.
• Sophomore Anya Poole has handed out a career-high three assists in each of the past two games. She played a career-high 36 minutes at Minnesota.
• UNC made a season-high 21 free throws (in 28 attempts) at Minnesota.
• The Tar Heels are shooting free throws much more successfully away from home this season. They've hit 76.8 percent of freebies in the three road games, 70.7 in the two neutral games and just 55.6 in the two games at home.
• Eight different players have scored in double figures at least once this season and six Tar Heels are averaging 8.9 points or more per game.
• UNC has outscored opponents a combined 265-131 before halftime through seven games.
• Minnesota's 38.6 shooting percentage is the highest by a Tar Heel opponent this season. UNC is limiting opponents to a 30.8 shooting percentage, fourth in the nation.
• UNC also ranks fourth nationally in scoring margin (+31.3). The Tar Heels are seventh in scoring defense (allowing 48.9 ppg), 13th in rebounding margin (+12.7), and 14th in rebounds per game (46.0).
• Individually, Alyssa Ustby leads the ACC and ranks 14th nationally with four in seven games. She's second in the conference in rebounds per game (10.7), 20th in the nation.
• UNC forced 24 or more turnovers in each of the first three games this season (NC A&T, Charlotte, Appalachian State). The Tar Heels forced that many just twice (S.C. State, Clemson) in all of 2020-21. The Carolina defense has forced all seven opponents into double-digit turnovers.
• UNC scored first and led wire-to-wire in the first four games of the season. In the fifth and sixth, in Bimini, the Tar Heels trailed at points of both games by as many as three points before coming back to win. Five points (late first quarter at Minnesota) is the largest margin by which UNC has trailed this season.
• UNC has outscored its opponent in 23 of 28 quarters this season. The exceptions are the second quarter at TCU (when the Horned Frogs led 14-12 as the Tar Heels shot 25.0 from the field), the third quarter vs. VCU (when the Rams outscored UNC 17-16), the fourth quarter vs. Washington (when the Huskies outscored UNC 14-12), and the first quarter (tied 17-17) and the third quarter (UM led 26-19) at Minnesota.
• Minnesota outscored UNC 47-43 in the second half on Wednesday, marking the first time this season that a team has outscored UNC in a half.
• The Tar Heels hold a 109-40 advantage in second-chance points this season. They've held every opponent to single-digits in that category.
