The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority Foundation has the money it needs for the second phase of a new all-inclusive playground being built at Sokol Park.
The Exchange Club of Tuscaloosa donated $30,000 to the PARA Foundation Thursday for Mason’s Place.
PARA Executive Director Gary Minor the playground allows people of all abilities and ages an opportunity to have fun.
“We called it the ‘TAP’ playground, the Tuscaloosa All-Accessible Playground,” Minor said. “So it’s designed for people who are differently-abled to be able to enjoy it.”
The playground features wheelchair-accessible play areas, ensuring all children can play together.
“Tuscaloosa has a lot of kids who are physically disabled, we are the capital for Alabama for the mentally disabled too, and so we have a lot of folks who use it,” Minor said.
The first phase of the project was completed last year and includes play areas designed like prominent landmarks in Tuscaloosa including Bryant-Denny Stadium, Denny Chimes and the Bama Theatre.
The second phase will feature a woodland theme. Minor said the third phase of the project will feature the Black Warrior River because of its significant impact on Tuscaloosa County.
By the time all three phases are complete, it will be the largest playground of its kind in Alabama.
